Reversible Ridged garter and cable scarf
I just love how this scarf came out! And with such a simple pattern, I was able to write it down and know it is repeatable. I might try making one that is wider, especially with the new "super large bulky oversized scarf" trend.
[Edit: I am so excited because All Free Knitting accepted this pattern and featured it several times on their site!]
Level: beginner/Intermediate
Stitches you need to know: knit, (knit through back loop-optional), purl, slip, cable
Materials
Patons classic wool worsted yarn in plum heather (or similar) 1+ skeins (this scarf uses about 1.3 skeins to be extra long because I made it for someone tall. One skein makes a scarf approximately 55 inches)
Cast on 26 stitches divisible by 8, plus 2)

MAIN PATTERN

Rows 2-6: SL1 *K3 P1* K1TBL
Row 7: SL K3 P1 K3 P1 CBL8 in pattern K3 P1 K3 P1K1TBL

Row 25: SL K3 P1 K3 P1 CBL8 in pattern K3 P1 K3 P1K1TBL
Rows 26-42: SL1 *K3 P1* K1TBL
REPEAT ROWS 1-42 to desired length and weave in ends.
I recommend binding off while knitting row 5 or row 29, but you can stop anywhere.
K - knit
P - purl
K1TBL - knit one through back loop (I like the edge this creates but you can knit the last stitch of every row as regular K stitch or a KTBL.
CBL8 in pattern: slide four stitches onto a cable needle and keep in front. The next four stitches you will knit as follows: K3 P1 (to keep the pattern the scarf). Then you will knit the four stitches on your cable needle the same way K3 P1.
SL1 - slip stitch from one needle to the other without knitting it.
A few notes:
This pattern looks identical from front and back, which is perfect for a scarf. I just love a cable scarf where both sides look good.
The repeating pattern has the cable after 6 rows, 12 rows, 6 rows, 18 rows. I am left-handed, so the cables cross over to the right. If you knit right-handed and put the cable stitches in front, your cable will go the opposite way.
Where it says row 8-28 - is that suppose to be row 8-18 ??
