The perfect homemade knit gift for the high school graduate: a scarf in their college's colors! This 1x1 rib pattern knits up to look the same from both sides (perfect for a scarf).
Materials
needles: 4mm or size for your gage and yarn.
yarn I used (worsted weight):
Color A: Evergreen
Color B: white
Color C: goldenrod
For best results, yarns need to be the same (or very similar) thickness. I used worsted weight.
Note: carry unused yarn as you go. I struggle making that work so for the long stretches of Color A, I cut the other two and wove them in when I was finished.
Start with Color A
cast on 40 (or any even number for your gage and desired width).
row 1: *p1k1*
row 2: *p1k1*
continue 1x1 rib for a total of 26 rows.
Rows 27-28: color B *p1k1*
Rows 29-34: color C *p1k1*
switch to Color B:
rows 35-36: option 1 (as seen in photo): slip first stitch. *k1 sl1 with yarn in front* (knit the knits, slip the purls). This option makes it look like one row of white.
rows 35-36 option two: *p1k1* (this looks like two rows fo white—same as rows 27-28).
(option 3: *k1p1* for one row. The yarn will be on the other side. Slide back for next row. This will correct itself when you do the next color B after Color A.(row 43-44 below)
rows 37-42: color A *p1k1*
rows 43-44: color B same as rows 35-36.
rows 45-50: color C *p1k1*
rows 51-52: color B *p1k1*
Switch to color A and start the pattern (rows 1-52) all over again.
Repeat to desired length (I did the pattern a total of 4 times; at my gage that was just over five feet including the final ending section).
End with 25 rows of Color A: *p1k1*
Cast off in pattern using method that best corresponds to your cast on method.
Tuck in all yarn ends. No blocking required. Optional: add fringe or tassels in any combo of colors A, B, C as desired.
p1 purl one; k1 knit one, sl1 slide the stitch without knitting or purling into it.
