Summer Shimmer Shawl

Materials:

Lion Brand Shawl in cake (or shawl in a ball). I used Wind Chimes (shawl in a cake 481 yards). Note, Lion Brand calls this worsted weight yarn. I think it is DK weight and recommend using DK or sock weight yarn for this pattern. I think it would also work with lighter weight yarn (adjusting number of stitches for your gage).

(my gage 15 stitches in 6 inches and 20 rows in 6 inches in pattern with the largest needles). That’s 10 st/4 in.

Needles: for my gauge, 7 mm needles

Optional start with smaller needles and change every few rows. Using multiple needle sizes is optional. I wanted the beginning to be a little tighter. You can use the same needle size the entire time. (I used 7 mm for a loose and airy result).

This is how I did it.

Start with 5 mm

SET UP

Cast on 3

1: K3

Change to 5.5 mm

2: K1 KFBF K1 (5 st)

3: p1 K3 p1

Change to 6.0 mm

4: k1 KFB KFBF KFB k1 (9 st)

5: p1 k2 p3 k2 p1

Change to 6.5 mm

6: *k* (this is actually a double loop row)

7: p1 k2 *p* k2 p1 (drop the extra loop on all stitches).

change to 7.0 mm

8: k1 kfb k1 kfb kfbf kfb k1 kfb k1 (15 st)

9: p1 k2 p2 pm p5 pm p2 k2 p1 (pm = place marker)

The basic pattern

10: k1 kfb knit to one before marker. kfb, sm, kfb, knit to one before marker. kfb, sm, kfb knit till 2 left. kfb k1

11: p1 k2 *p* (slipping markers as you come to them, till 3 stitches remaining) k2 p1

12: k across with double loop

13: same as row 11, but drop every extra loop (no stitch increase or decrease)

repeat these four rows (10-13) to desired sized. Only row 10 is a row increase—adding 6 stitches every fourth row.

Ending rows (border)

after a row 11 (p1 k2 *p* k2 p1),

row 1: same as row 10 (increase row)

row 2: p1 k2 then *K1P1* to last three k2 p1

row 3: k1 kfb k1 *seed* to one before marker. kfb sm kfb *see* to one before marker. kfb sm kfb seed to last three k3

row 4: same as row 2

row 5: same as row 3

row 6: same as row 2

row 7: cast-off in pattern (as row 3)

Weave in ends. No blocking required.

With my loose knitting style, I used a little more than half the large skein.
