Fibonacci Striped Garter Scarf

Updated: Mar 19, 2018

This scarf is actually really easy. All you need to know the the knit stitch. You can also use the slip stitch at the beginning of most rows (but you don’t have to).

I used the Fibonacci number sequence to determine how many rows of the main color before putting in 2 rows of the contrasting color. This is garter stitch pattern so I count “1” for every pairs of rows. Instead of trying to count the actual row number as listed below, simply count the “purl” rows on the right side to keep track of where you are.

1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 21, 13, 8, 5, 3, 2, 1

[SCARF SIZE NOTES: This scarf uses the Fibonacci number sequence to determine how many rows of the main color before putting in 2 rows of the contrasting color. The number is for two rows together as a pair. So you can count the “purl” rows on the right side to keep track of where you are.

1. First, one pair of rows (cast on and row one).

pair of rows of contrasting color

2. two pairs of rows of garter (so always knitting. I slip the first stitch expect when change colors)

pair of rows of contrasting color

3. three pairs of rows of garter (so always knitting. I slip the first stitch expect when change colors)

pair of rows of contrasting color

5. five pairs of rows of garter (so always knitting. I slip the first stitch expect when change colors)

pair of rows of contrasting color

8. eight pairs of rows of garter (so always knitting. I slip the first stitch expect when change colors)

pair of rows of contrasting color

13. thirteen pairs of rows of garter (so always knitting. I slip the first stitch expect when change colors)

pair of rows of contrasting color

1,2,3,5,8,13,21, 34, 21, 13, 8, 5, 3, 2, 1

(for longer scarf, you can repeat 34 before starting back down. For shorter, start back down sooner).

The next number in the sequence: 1, 2, 3, 5, 8,13, 21, 34, 55, 79, etc. Just add last two numbers together for the next one.
