I decided I wanted to knit some things specifically to sell for Valentine's Day (or any time you want to share the love). Frustrated at finding a pattern for knitting a heart, I created my own. You can find a collection of my hand-knit "love" projects on my Etsy store.
Easy-Peasy Hearts
materials
yarn—scrap yarn is just find. Any gauge, just use the appropriate needle size for your yarn. My sample is worsted weight.
needle size: 5 mm (for worsted weight). Adjust for your yarn.
Notes: This heart is knit garter stitch sideways from one side to the other (not from bottom to top). I searched online for a simple knit heart pattern that I could understand and follow. After several missteps and failed attempts, I decided to create my own and do it sideways! The size of your completed heart will depend on your yarn, needle size, and the gauge at which you knit (garter stitch).
Stitches:
k - knit
Kfb - knit into front and back of same stitch (makes one additional stitch)
K2tog - knot 2 stitches together (decreases by one stitch)
Instructions for standard heart (see below for the smaller version):
Cast on 3 stitches
Row 1: knit across
Row 2: Kfb, kfb, kfb (6 stitches)
Row 3 and all odd rows: knit across
Row 4: Kfb, knit to last stitch, kfb (8 stitches)
Row 5: knit
Row 6: knit to last stitch, kfb (9 stitches)
Row 7: knit
Row 8: K2tog knit to last stitch, kfb (9 stitches)
Row 9: knit
Row 10: K2tog knit to last stitch kfb (this is the center of your heart) (9 stitches)

Row 13: knit
Row 14: Kfb, knit to last stitch 2 stitches, K2tog (9 stitches)
Row 15: knit
Row 16: knit to last two stitches, K2tog (8 stitches)
Row 17: knit
Row 18: K2tog knit to last 2 stitches, K2tog (6 stitches)
Row 19: knit
Row 20: K2tog K2tog K2tog (3 stitches)
Bind off.
Weave in ends.
Smaller version: This follows the same pattern as above without the extra knit rows in between, resulting in a smaller heart with same yarn and needles. I recommend you try the regular version first.

I used the regular size hearts as coasters—I added white trim around the edge; I used the smaller ones as decoration for napkin rings.
I am sharing my pattern for your own personal use. Thanks!
