Colosseum Scarf

Updated: Jan 18, 2018

I call this the Colosseum Scarf because it reminds me of the actual Colosseum. The two rows you knit (so they look knit/purl from the front) form the stories. The two row stacks of knit stitches on top of each other alternated with purl stitches look like the statues decorating the outside of the building. The other side of the scarf has a different look—both

sides look great which I think is important when you can see both sides like when wearing a scarf. [Now featured on allfreeknitting. https://www.allfreeknitting.com/Knit-Scarves/Colosseum-Scarf This scarf is for sale on my etsy store, FortySeven Sheep.

Materials: Mandala Skein—color combo of your choice or any worsted weight yarn (I do not recommend 100% cotton yarn for this project. You can certainly use it, but it will knit up and drape differently)

Needle size 7 (I used circular needles because the scarf is knit sideways—but yes it is knit flat)

Notes: This scarf is knit lengthwise to create vertical stripes.

I had already used part of this skein as part of a cowl pattern so my scarf probably takes 3/4 of skein. That said, if I’d had more yarn, I probably would have kept knitting and made the scarf wider.

Stitches you need to know: slip stitch, knit, purl. That’s it.

Gauge: not crucial for this project. 13 stitches/4 inches.

Instructions

Cast on 200 stitches. (Finished length approximate 72 inches)

Row 1: Knit

Row 2: Sl1 knit

Row 3: Sl1 K1P1

Row 4: Sl1 K1 P1 (knit the knits, purl the purls)

Repeat to desired width. To match sides, cast off while knitting Row 2. Weave in ends.

Instructions are vague...row 2 do you mean *sl 1, k 1 repeat from * across or do you mean sl 1 and knit the rest of the sts...row 3 ..do you mean *sl1, k1, p1 repeat from * across or do you mean sl1, * k1, p1 repeat across...then on row 4 do you mean * sl 1,k1,p1 repeat from * and knit the knit sets as seen ? Or do you mean sl 1, * k1, p1 repeat from * across knit the k etc as seen and p the p are as seen? Please clarify getting 2 different patterns ..

The slip 1 is just to keep the edge neat, so it's slip 1 and knit the rest of the row. Keep in mind the pattern will not work out perfectly, since the majority of it is a 2 stitch pattern but having slipped the first stitch, 2 is not divisible into 199.

Mandala yarn is a #3 light worsted/dk weight yarn, will the pattern actually work with a #4 worsted weight yarn? I knit for the out of the cold project to distribute warm clothing to the homeless and I have a huge stockpile of worsted that I would love to use to make these for that charity.
