I had partial skeins of green/blue color self-striping yarn and a bland beige yarn, both worsted weight. Neither was enough for a scarf, but I hoped that the two together might be. When I started, I thought I had more of the color-changing yarn. At
first, I was going to knit a simple k1p1 so it looks like knit from both sides. but that scrunches it up—which requires more yarn to be wider. Also, the request was for a scarf that wasn’t too thick.
In the end, I decided to do what I think is called a b broken seed stitch. It’s all knit on the right side and k1p1 on the wrong side (so the purls always line up). This keeps the yarn wider. (I didn’t want to do a regular seed stitch). I also alternated the yarn by doing four rows of color A (self-striping) and two rows of color B (beige), bringing the yarn up the side as I went.
Unfortunately, I ran out of color A before the scarf was as long as I wanted. (I realized this about half-way through, but I’d already established my pattern). So, then, I used color B to make color dip effect at the end. I tapered the end more to make the scarf longer before running out of yarn than for any other reason. And of course adding fringe on the end gives it a longer look as well.
Cast on 24 stitches with color A.

Change to color B

Repeat rows 1-6 to desired length.

You should have 6 cast-off stitches. Add fringe to each one.
For first side of scarf, pick up 24 stitches from cast on edge. Follow the directions for the ends.
