Linen-Stitch Cowl in the round

When finished, this cowl should fit snugly over the head (the top opening just large enough to fit so you can get it on. Check your gage to fit the person’s head). This pattern is from top (tightest) of cowl down.

dk yarn (I used less than on skein)

3.5 mm needle (or size needed for gage/tension for your knitting style)

SL1: all slip stitches are with yarn in front.

m: marker. You will need ten (Use spare bits of a different color yarn (make sure it is same or thinner than yarn you are using).

PM: place marker

SM: slip marker

KFB: knit front back(knit into front and back of the same stitch--adds one stitch)

Linen stitch: K1 SL1 (knit the stitch that was slipped on the previous round and slip the stitch that was knit the previous round.)

Note, this pattern will be adding stitches distributed evenly at ten places around the cowl. If you need slightly fewer or more stitches, adjust to space evenly. If you will start your cowl significantly smaller (for a child), consider only adding stitches at 9 or 8 points (if considerably larger, perhaps at 11 or 12 points).

Directions

Cast on 101 stitches (or amount needed for size—odd number of stitches)

Round 1: (be sure the cast on row is NOT twisted): K1 *PM K10*

Round 2: *K1 SL1* K1 (slip marker when you get to them).

Round 3: SL1 *K1 SL1* (slip marker when you get to them).

Rounds 4 and 5: Repeat round 2 and 3

Round 6: *KFB move marker, KFB. continue linen stitch until stitch right before marker.*

Rounds 7, 8, 9, 10: linen stitch Move markers as you come to them).

Repeat rounds 6-10 to desired width.

cast off knitting each stitch as you cast it off. I did this on a "10th round"
